Alberta is Canada’s sunniest province, with over 300 days of sunshine per year. The province is filled with spectacular beauty, thanks to being the crossroads for three different ecosystems: mountains, boreal forest and prairies. But the rugged woods, hills and prairies of Alberta aren’t the only attractions in the province that are worth seeing. Big cities like Calgary and Edmonton have a great deal to offer the intrepid RVer as well.

Edmonton is the provincial capital and the fifth-largest municipality in Canada, with over a million residents in the greater metro area. The city was founded as a trading fort in the 18th century, which means it’s steeped in history. It’s also a cultural hotspot, with a number of amazing sights to see.

Schwab's R.V. World in Leduc, Alberta, is your local RV dealer. Here are some of the top attractions in the City of Champions to help you plan your next adventure.

West Edmonton Mall

As the largest shopping mall in the entirety of North America, this is a definite attraction for urban travelers looking for the best shopping Canada can offer. There are over 800 stores on three floors across the 350,000 square metres of retail floor area. Shops include Hudson’s Bay, Sunrise Records, West 49 and Homesense.

West Edmonton Mall has several themed regions like Bourbon Street, Europa Boulevard and Chinatown. Additional features include an indoor shooting range, an 18-hole mini golf course, an ice rink and the World Waterpark, which is the second-largest indoor water park in the world. The world’s largest indoor roller coaster, the Mindbender, is a feature of Galaxyland, which is an indoor amusement park.

To camp near where you’ll shop, visit Glowing Embers RV Park & Travel Centre, which offers 288 full-service sites, a laundromat, a convenience store, WiFi and a banquet hall with kitchen facilities. You’ll be an easy eight-minute drive from the West Edmonton Mall if you stay here.

Royal Alberta Museum

This human and natural history museum was established in 1967 in downtown Edmonton. It features over 7,600 square metres of exhibition space, including collections of Life Science, Earth science, Collections Services and Human History artifacts. Kids will love the Children Gallery that has places for kids to play and learn, as well as the creepy-crawlies in the Bug Gallery.

Shakers Acres RV Park is 14 kilometres to the west of the museum, with 163 RV sites on its premises. Full-hookups are available on three-fourths of the sites. There are WiFi hotspots, hot showers, picnic tables and some fire pits with firewood available for purchase. A convenience store, a playground and a laundromat are also available at this park.

Edmonton Valley Zoo

This zoo offers you and your family an engaging way to experience nature right in the heart of the city. Over 350 animals are cared for at the zoo, which endeavours to recreate natural habitats for the animals to enhance their quality of life and help educate guests about conservation efforts. The Wander Trail is the central corridor of the zoo that allows visitors to explore as they travel to the different exhibits in the zoo, allowing children to play with glacial melt-water and observe free-range animals.

Just 12 kilometres south of the North Saskatchewan River in Rainbow Valley Park, you can park your RV at the Rainbow Valley Campground. This park is open between April and October with 78 RV sites. There are electric hook-ups, toilets, showers and picnic tables available, as well as laundry and dumping facilities and a playground.
